Diversity cannot be reduced to a simple metric…
AABPS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was created in part due to a need for a professional society for the growing number of Black and African-American physician scientist trainees and faculty. Black representation among physician scientists continues to be underrepresented when compared to those of White and Asian descent. Diversity cannot be reduced to a simple metric, however. The National Institutes of Health have long promoted an increase in Black MD/PhD students because of improved patient outcomes and satisfaction.1,2 Likewise, increasing Black representation in the biomedical sciences allows for a wider array of great minds with unique viewpoints to all then be focused on improving human health.3
